The History of American English

This chapter of the History of English spotlights the development of American. It shows how English settlers borrowed words from Native Americans to describe new plants and animals as well as how the Dutch, Germans and Italians added further words to the growing American English vocabulary.

Capitalism played a further role introducing plenty of business speak such as ‘breakeven’, ‘bottom line’, ‘blue chip’, ‘white collar’, ‘downsizing’ and ‘merger’.
